    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Gryphin G-2216 Non-Skid is a two-component, heavy-duty epoxy non-skid coating containing a synthetic resinous binder system and abrasive particles. This material was designed for use over Gryphin G-249 Epoxy Primer or Gryphin G-250 Chelating Primer. This system can be used on steel, aluminum or concrete when a heavy-duty non-skid is required. G-2216 Non-Skid features excellent resistance to oils, grease, hydraulic fluids, detergent solutions, salt water, alcohol, gasoline, and most acids. Because of its excellent resistance to wear and extreme temperature changes, G-2216 Epoxy Non-Skid will provide years of service if properly applied.

This coating meets the performance requirement of MIL-D-24483A(S) and DOD-C-24667.

    USES

Warehouse floors, parking garages, walkways, railroad cars, factory work areas, loading ramps, and any surfaces needing non-skid properties.

    SURFACE PREPARATION

As with any coating application, the better the preparation, the better the results. Prior to coating application, the surface must be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, and other contaminants. Recommended for steel: 3 mil profile or near-white metal. The procedure to be followed in surface preparation is as follows:

    1. Clear the area to be cleaned of all loose equipment and rolling stock.

    2. Rope off an area of convenient size for cleaning and priming.

    3. Post "Keep Off' and "No Smoking" signs.

    4. For metal surfaces -

      a. Clean area with a Tenant Machine then with disc or drum sander.

      b. Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air.

      c. Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249 or G-250 Primer.

    5. For concrete surfaces -

      a. Sandblast with dry, grease-free sand.

      b. If sandblasting is not possible, clean with Tenant Machine followed by disc sander, drum sander and wire brushes.

      c. Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air.

      d. Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249 or G-250 Primer.

    6. For more detailed instructions, see Gryphin bulletin on Surface Preparation.

    APPLICATION METHOD

G-2216 Epoxy Non-Skid can be applied by rolling, spraying, brushing or trowelling.

    MIXING INSTRUCTIONS

G-2216 Epoxy Non-Skid is a two-part deck covering compound. The two parts must be thoroughly mixed before use. The following procedure is recommended:

    1. If G-2216 Epoxy Non-Skid has been stored in the sun, it is recommended that it be placed under cover for 24 hours before mixing. This will lower the temperature of the material and ensure the longest possible working life when mixed.
    2. No thinner is required for the G-2216 Epoxy Non-Skid. The consistency as received is correct for rolling, spraying, brushing or trowelling applications.
    3. Some settling of grit may occur in kits that have been in storage for a considerable length of time. This condition can be improved by turning cans of base material upside down 24 hours prior to mixing and by ensuring, during the mixing operation, that grit is loosened by scraping the bottom of the can.
    4. Add the small can of accelerator to each I gallon or 5 gallon container of base material.
    5. Mix thoroughly using power mixer. Scrape sides and bottom of container to ensure complete mixing. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes of mixing will be required.

    G-501, G-501-Ml-7 Epoxy Non-Skid

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

G-501 Epoxy Non-Skid is a lightweight, non-slip deck covering compound developed for use on aluminum, steel, wood, concrete or polyester. This two-part system meets all the requirements of MIL-D-23003 (Ships) Type H. It is designed for use over Gryphin’s G-249 Primer and G-250 Primer. G-501 Epoxy Non-Skid contains a synthetic resinous binder and abrasive particles. It is easy to apply, economical to use, durable, and has the following advantages:

    1. It produces a deck covering which is tough with extremely long-wearing characteristics and which maintains excellent adhesion to the deck surface.

    2. The coating is resistant to fire and jet blasts and is odorless and sanitary. It has an excellent appearance and is resistant to extreme temperature changes.

    3. It is resistant to oil, greases, jet fuels, salt water and most acids.

G-501 Epoxy Non-Skid has a shelf life in excess of one year when stored in tightly sealed containers. It has been applied on many naval and commercial vessels with outstanding success.

G-501 Epoxy Non-Skid is available in I gallon and 5 gallon two-component kits. Each kit is supplied with the proper proportions of base material and accelerator. The entire kit should be mixed at one time; any attempt to mix less than the entire kit may result in an incorrect proportion of accelerator to base material, which will result in improper curing.

G-501-MI-7 formulation is the same as the formulation for G-501 except G-501-MI-7 contains a lighter, static-eliminating ingredient. On a volume basis, G-501-MI-7 coating is half the weight of a G-501 coating. All the information in this Bulletin applies equally to each formulation.

    SURFACE PREPARATION

In order to obtain optimum adhesion to a surface, that surface must be free of all foreign matter. Any dirt, grease, oil, rust or other matter will prevent maximum available adhesion and will somewhat reduce the life of the Non-Skid coating. For best results sandblast to a white metal surface. The procedure to be followed in surface preparation is as follows:

      1. Clear the area to be cleaned of all loose equipment and rolling stock.

      2. Rope of area of convenient size for cleaning and priming.

      3. Post "Keep Off" and "No Smoking" signs.

      4. For metal surfaces:

        1. Clean the area with a Tenant Machine followed by sanding with disc or drum sander.

        2. Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air.

        3. Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249 or G-250 Primer.

      5. For concrete surfaces:

        1. Sandblast with dry, grease-free sand.

        2. If sandblasting is not possible, clean with Tenant Machine followed by disc sander, drum sander and wire brushes.

        3. Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air.

        4. Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249 or G-250 Primer.

      6. For more detailed instructions see Gryphin bulletin on Surface Preparation.

    APPLICATION TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS

When surface and air temperatures are above 70o F, G-501 Series Non-Skids and Gryphin Primers will cure at a faster rate than shown above. When surface and air temperatures are below 50o F, external heat is required to cure the Non-Skids. Under these conditions it is recommended that the supplier be contacted for technical assistance. It should be remembered, however, that with air temperatures below 50oF, a deck under hot sun might develop deck surface temperatures approaching 80oF.

HUMIDITY AND DEWPOINT (NAVSEA CHAP. 634)

Humidity has a substantial impact on surface preparation and on how well the coatings cure. The 85% maximum relative humidity requirement is the accepted standard. When the 85% limit is exceeded, the metal substrate, before being primed, corrodes much faster than if the relative humidity were lower. Also, when the maximum limit is surpassed, the cure of most paints is slowed and sometimes altered. 'Me result can be blooming or blushing followed by the failure of the coating systems. The dew point is also critical during surface preparation and the application of coatings. The dew point is the temperature at which water will condense on a surface at a given humidity. In order to avoid moisture contamination and corrosion failure, the substrate temperature should be 5' above the dewpoint temperature.

    CLEAN-UP

Equipment used for the application of G-501 Non-Skid Coating can be cleaned up with xylene or Methyl Ethyl Ketone. Avoid skin contact; refer to cautionary section of this brochure.

    WORKING LIFE (Pot Life)

Working life is the time during which the mixed G-501 Epoxy Non-Skid can remain in the container at a specified temperature and still remain usable. This may vary with volume of material and temperature. The following table gives the working life of quantities up to 5 gallons at three different temperatures.

    Temperature

    Working Life

    70° F

    8 hours

    100° F

    5 hours

If the lid of the container is left off for a prolonged period of time, there will be a loss of solvent resulting in an increase in viscosity of the material. This should be avoided.

    GRYPHIN DURADECK NON-SKID COATING SERIES

    Coefficient of Friction Characteristics

Due to its high coefficient of friction under wet or oily conditions, Duradeck provides an excellent non-skid surface for all types of flooring. The coefficient of friction values shown in the following bar graphs were obtained with an Olsen Medical Products Horizontal Pull Slipmeter, and assumes the use of rubber-soled safety shoes. Surface conditions that gave a coefficient of friction of less than 0.50 are considered slippery. The bar graphs demonstrate the vast superiority of Duradeck over other types of floor surfaces.
